AboutThe Hungry Cosmopolitan

[left]

Launched in 2015 as a community for food and travel lovers, The Hungry Cosmopolitan is a go-to hub for travel and culinary inspiration. Via The Hungry Cosmopolitan I like to inspire people to explore the world and the associated culinary delights it has to offer.

If you love to cook, bake and/or travel, you’ll feel right at home here. Especially if you are a true cosmopolitan but aren’t in the position to stay away from home for a trip for several months (let alone to quit your job) – just like me. On this blog I show you how to indulge your wanderlust besides your busy day job. Oh, and how to keep those tastebuds satisfied πŸ˜‰

Stay awhile, won’t you?

How “The Hungry Cosmopolitan” came to life

My infinitely curious and ambitious little self is always looking for new things to discover. My grandfather was active in the food service industry for many years. He shares his love for people through the food he cooks for them. I’m a real sucker for his homemade chicken soup. And what about the wanderlust gene, I hear you say? I inherited that one from my mother. She is a real adventurer and a true cosmopolitan. Ain’t nobody keeping that lady homebound!

In the final year of my University I moved to Cape Town, South Africa for 5 months. That, my friends, was a huge adventure for me and also the moment I got infected with the ‘Must-see-the-rest-of-the-world-too’ virus.

Due to personal circumstances, I didn’t have the opportunity to travel the world for several months after I returned. I got a full time job and didn’t get to travel for 4 years after that.

During that period of not traveling, I became a complete cooking and baking addict. In the meantime I spent my time figuring out ways to travel the world on a reasonable budget and without having to give up my job in order to do so.

2015 was the first year for me to really spread my wings. I visited Iceland in February and traveled Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore in April, with more to come! When I travel, I love to blend in with the locals and try their best dishes. When I don’t travel, I cook and bake and try to create my own version of those great dishes I had during my trips. My love for writing and photography inspired me to combine all these passions and share them with the rest of the world through this blog.

And there you have it, The Hungry Cosmopolitan was born!

So, who created this little slice of “hell yes”?

Glad you asked. Currently based in the Netherlands, The Hungry Cosmopolitan was founded by Zilla Deurenberg. Third person aside, I dreamed of creating my own blog to share my passions with the rest of the world. There are so many beautiful things to see, taste and experience on this big blue marble, so why keep it all to yourself?

Besides this blog, I have two jobs: one as a mechanical engineer and one as a communications consultant. Pretty diverse, huh? In my spare time I also play the piano and I go western horse riding every week. ‘How do you manage?’, is a question I get a lot. Honestly, I don’t know. I just do.
